I took part in a group coaching call yesterday with the artist Alice Sheridan, I discussed how my inspiration for my initial foray into painting last year, was my collection of family sewing items. I also used this inspiration for my previous textile work, an example of which is shown above, from a few years ago.
Following the call I looked back into some of my old sketchbooks, I was quite surprised to find how relevant the comments in them were, to how Alice perceives my painting now, below are a few excepts from previous journals…..
“I like things that are tactile or sculptural, worn by age with a story to tell….”
“I need to make work that is derived from within myself and my unique experience…”
“…. make work that reflects my personal connections to the items and my emotional response to them, even if the original objects aren’t actually used.”
I’d like to explore books more, in various formats, with my notes and relevant quotes…”
“…..possibly produce a catalogue of my inspiration objects with notes about their history and relevance, similar to Emily Dickinson’s book, “Envelope Poems” which I love for both its content and beautiful format”
In a previous coaching call with Kerry Schroeder last year in which I asked “how can a collection of 3D pieces lead to an abstract painting” her reply was “Our life experiences are all relevant to our art, inspiration source shows the prescience of life, intimacy and history, keep exploring them”
This has set me off on a new path, exploring how I can amalgamate my painting and textiles into a lifetimes future work, I’m feeling very excited today and I’ve already made some notes of the way forward, I’m keeping an open mind about where this might lead me.

That’s great Anne! I always think the ideas that are the best are the ones that keep coming back ? On another note I saw some amazing work recent!y by Annwyn Dean (may not be spelt right!) she uses vintage textiles to print from and creates beuatiful artists books with the prints. 😊

I love her work but even better in the group “pagepaperstitch” is Joan Newell’s work which I adore, I’d love to do something along these lines, I have so many vintage family textiles but I’d like to make things that could be shown in a gallery setting, like my textile stuff did (I’ve even been in a Barbican exhibition called “art of the stitch”), I need to develop books that support my paintings/ textiles, or maybe make textiles/painting that go in a frame.? I do make small books like these and altered books, I’ve done it for years xxx any thoughts welcome but showing, selling, open studios and maybe art fairs, are what I’d really like to do. Do art fairs have book artists I wonder?.

There certainly are fairs dedicated to book arts!….that’s where I saw A.Dean at the Turn the Page annual artists book fair. Sign up for Sarah Bodman’s newsletter she runs the degree in Book Arts at Bristol Uni
